Tony Donohoe Joins SOPA as AfC Scotland Project Co-ordinator

Tony Donohoe has recently taken up the post as SOPA’s Age-friendly Communities (AfC) Project Coordinator. Tony’s role will focus primarily on working across Scotland to move towards increasing the number of AfCs.

Tony has a BA (Hons) in Social Policy and a PG Diploma in Housing. He has worked in Local Government, the academic and private sectors as well as having a period of self-employment. His main area of expertise is in housing but has also worked with national improvement agendas on health and social care in Scotland as well as welfare reform. He also has a strong background in research and strategy development having undertaken numerous projects over the years for a range of clients.

Age-friendly Communities Scotland

SOPA is leading this work to stimulate local and national action to achieve better outcomes for people in and approaching later life, using the World Health Organisation (WHO) Age-friendly Communities Framework.  With an increasing proportion of the Scottish population over 65 years of age, this is an ideal time to focus on supporting healthy and active later lives. An AfC is somewhere where local people come together to make life better for the people who live there, particularly as they age. These places make it possible for people to continue to stay living in their homes, participate in the activities that they value, and contribute to their communities, for as long as possible. Being Age-friendly means designing services and facilities with older people, not for them.
